“All he wants is you,” she said softly. That is when I broke, and I began to cry.
Nothing can prepare you for motherhood. You can read all the books, listen to everyone’s personal experience, attend birthing classes, and watch informational videos. And you are still totally unprepared. That is why if you have a village of support when you bring your baby home, you are a blessed woman. One of the pillars in my support village was my sister Tressie.
Tressie had three children, and I literally used her as my personal on call nurse with baby related questions especially with my first child. One of the first nights we came home from the hospital, I remember sitting in the rocking chair holding my infant son. I was frustrated, defeated, and overwhelmed. He had jaundice and difficulty eating. Tressie had came by to offer her guidance. At one point in the conversation, I remember her telling me, “All he wants is you.” This phrase has stayed with me three years later.
It is unfathomable to understand or even try to grasp the love shared between a mother and their child. How precious it was to think that my sweet little innocent boy just wanted me, a weary woman who had no clue what she was doing. I felt inadequate and most days I still feel like I have fallen short.
In my short time of being a mother, I have learned that your children love you unconditionally. They are quick to forgive and forget any misunderstandings. They desperately just want your love returned to them. They just want you.
My son’s birthday and Easter were very close this year. I have reminisced over the early days of my son’s young life and the last days of our Savior’s. Despite the inadequacy I have felt in mothering my son, especially in the early days, I have learned I am the one he wants. He doesn’t see me for my flaws. He just desires my unwavering devotion. Amazingly, Jesus yearns for my personal devotion too. He understands that I am nothing. I have made mistakes and sinned. Yet he still wants me.
Friend, Jesus paid a great price when he died on the cross for us. The Bible tells us in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” The only requirement that God has is that we believe in Jesus Christ and him dying on the cross for our sins. That’s such a simple request for something that anyone you meet would love to have- a life without end.
Maybe you have felt conquered by negative emotions in motherhood and your Christian walk- guilt, imperfection, and failure. I have been there. Take hope in knowing this though- as you look into your baby’s eyes and pray a prayer to Jesus- all he wants is you.
