Unexpectedly Winning
My husband was absolutely beaming when he placed it on my kitchen counter. It was not a bouquet of flowers, an invitation for a date to a fancy restaurant, or an all expense paid trip to our favorite vacation spot. This was an exciting surprise that I had not expected to see in my home that day, the next day, the next week, or even the next month. However, there it stood in all of its glory- a can of lysol spray.
During this time of quarantine, due to COVID-19, I have learned certain products that I would casually pick up from the grocery store while shopping are now like playing a matching game. You remember playing this game? You turn all the cards face down. When it’s your turn to play, you select two cards. Hopefully it is a match. If not, you need to memorize those cards so you can successfully score a match later in the game. This is a total game of chance. I have learned that visiting a store that sells lysol is much like turning over a card to just see if there will be a match.
My family has been practicing social distancing since March the 15th. We have tried to minimize our trips to a grocery store by doing grocery pickups or just going to our local Dollar General. We have been completely out of lysol spray during this time. Lysol spray was never to be found until last week, and it was nothing short of a miracle.
My husband is the one who runs errands so I gave him my list. There were several things needed, but I was really hoping he could find some lysol spray. Of course the shelves were barren where the product usually is. He asked an employee about it, and she confirmed they were out. She kindly offered to check their back room just in case. When she came back, she had one can of lysol in hand. It was the absolute last can in the entire store. Needless to say, when he placed that can of lysol on my kitchen counter, I was thrilled beyond measure. We finally had a match in the game of “Where’s the lysol?”
Sparrows & Spirituality
As we rejoiced throughout the day about finding the lysol, I was reminded of the following scripture, Matthew 6:25 “Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?”
Have you ever watched birds in your yard? Birds are not concerned about their next meal. They live day by day. Going to sleep and rising the next morning to live moment by moment is their existence. God, their creator, takes care of them every single day.
“Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” – Matthew 10:29-31
Out of all of God’s creation, you are his treasure. He knows the very number of hairs on your head. That is pretty personal because even as a parent I can not tell you the number of my children’s hairs on their head. Do you not think that our Heavenly Father will supply your need or maybe even your desire because he intimately knows you as his child?
I desired lysol because I feel like it serves as a barrier of protection for my family against COVID-19. I may not have prayed for lysol, but God knew the desires of my heart. My husband and I rejoice in finding that lysol because we know that was the Lord building our faith. Just as he feeds the birds of the field, he feeds his children physically and spiritually.
Psalms 37:4-5 instructs us to do the following: “Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”
Is there something you are needing from your Heavenly Father? Desires of your heart can be financial, physical, spiritual, mental, and the list could go on. God sees our desires, but he longs for our determination in serving him.
Friend, you are more valuable to God than sparrows. Do not be afraid during this time. Turn to his Word, and offer your praise in prayer. You never know when your lysol will be sitting on your kitchen counter.
Until next time,
Jennie
